2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the seminal album Double Cup by the late footwork pioneer DJ Rashad. Throughout the album, Rashad Harden (1979-2014) pushed the iconic sound of Chicago footwork to a massively experimental dimension, diluting its essence, reconfiguring its style, and deconstructing its sonic palette.
Idiosyncratic by form, and dancefloor-oriented by nature, the genre of footwork put a weird, experimental spin on the Ghetto House canon with 160BPM sound palettes, and deep sub-bass stabs cutting the hectic rhythmic framework to the core. Hailing from Chicago—the birthplace and mecca of Footwork—DJ Rashad has helped the development of the genre, bringing it to become a staple in almost every DJ set or club act today.
