Directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman (both making their feature film debut), Being John Malkovich is an American surrealist fantasy comedy-drama film released to widespread acclaim in 1999. Now 25 years post-release, artist and film-collaborator Geoff McFetridge recalls the collective anticipation behind the project. “The script had been around for a little while and it was known as the most bat shit crazy script in circulation. When it became known that Spike was going to make a film out of it everyone was so excited.”

One design from our Being John Malkovich capsule, the Business Card t-shirt, draws on elements used for Spike’s production company which McFetridge had been tasked with creating. “It is pure coincidence, and serendipitous, that the logo I did looks a lot like the Brain Dead logo.” The design includes the real address and phone number of the production office at the time.
